Today is the day of love and friendship, also known as Valentine’s Day.
We want to clearly establish that love is NOT just the most powerful force in the universe (as some would say), or the most beautiful emotion that can be felt, but that
love is a person.
We know that this concept collides with the general conception of what it is commonly understood as love. But, understanding this is basic and transcendental, since the correct understanding of love IS what really changes our lives.
The word of God, the Bible, makes this truth clear. We see it in the first letter (or epistle) of the apostle John (1 John 4:8-9) where he states “8 He who does not love has not known God, for God is love. 9 God’s love for us was shown in this, that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.”
God’s standard of love is higher than the one we interpret on a daily basis. God sets the standard of love based on Jesus’ sacrifice for us, as stated in verse 9.
Here we see a direct relationship between Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and His love for us:
Well-intentioned sacrifice for the right reasons = love.
Real and correct love focuses on the other, not on personal desires.
