Meet Benita, and how her life took a 180 degrees turn

At MoveUp our main goal is to empower those most-in-need so that they can excel in life, and improve the conditions of their families and communities.

Benita y su vidaAs an example, today we bring you the story of Benita Bivieca.

The context

Benita is a 40-year-old Dominican mother of 4 adult children. She lives with her husband, her 3-year-old son, her 18-year-old paralyzed daughter (special), her eldest daughter, 20 (not studying), and her two 13-year-old grandchildren.

She made it to the 1st. level of high-school, but she uses the MoveUp App, through our partner Esperanza, due to the motivation to continue preparing herself.

The drive

Benita is a very strong person, focused on “moving forward” without doing anything wrong. That is why she appreciates the Esperanza App, since it has allowed her to prepare more and learn about how to do her business better.

But above all, what the App has taught her the most, is the importance of MAKING PLANS. Through the courses taken in the app, Benita executed a plan to turn her life and the life of her family around.

The plan that would change her life

Her plan: rent the little house they lived in before, thus generating a fixed passive income, and relocate their trading business to a space on the lot of the new house.

From what she learned in the business course, “Business Plan”, and listening to current clients, she devised her new plan to build a larger house.

By doing this, she would be able to put her business in a better establishment, as well as make her daughter more comfortable, while renting her current home, thus increasing her monthly income. This plan is also her response to comments from her clients about how attractive it would be for them to have a better establishment and include food-sales in her offerings, which she could not do where they were initially.

The execution

In the midst of the pandemic, Benita and her husband took advantage of the time of confinement and went to work.

Days were dedicated to the construction of her new house, and they managed to finish the project of building a second larger house, in which she can have her special daughter, more comfortable and her business better established.

All of this, while maintaining a cafeteria/drink business, which she and her husband run from 8 am to 8 pm.

Benita comments: “I have a large family with two twins, (who do not live with me), a special daughter of 18, a small son of 3 and the eldest of 20. In addition to my husband.

We work only doing what is right, so we provide for our family by honest means, through a cafeteria/drink that we have. I love business courses because they help me develop my business. From them, I learned the importance of having a mission, and a vision, and a plan. That is why we now have the plan to finish building another better house to rent the old one and put in the new one (which would be bigger) a better established business, and to be able to sell food, which many in the area of the new house have asked me for.”

Here we leave you a short video in which you will hear more details about her change story, told by Benita herself (Spanish language).

The next step

Her favorite courses are “How to manage my business in times of crisis” and “The hurricane season”. In addition to all this, she is thinking about how to diversify her business even more, to generate more income and have a better quality of life. She is passionate about baking, and she is exploring her options to see how this new dream comes true.
